Sometimes Government is AWESOME!!
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!!
I know we piss and moan over government corruption and force against the individual, but once in a while, some government officials actually get it right!
I'm talking about my county executive, L. Brooks Patterson ([R] Oakland County, Michigan) who got this bright idea to attract business to our part of the state through, get this, FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS!!! Yes! I had no idea this good ol' boy had a techie bone in his body, but he does.
It started out with an idea tossed around to different IT companies, who agreed it was completely doable. Then came the bidding process, to see who would actually do the installations of wireless hubs throughout the county. A local company called MichTel won the bid. In exchange for doing this work, MichTel will be allowed to offer "for charge" higher speed access and advertising to Oakland County businesses and consumers. The wireless signal devices will be put on public buildings and electrical poles throughout the county. Rural communities that have no access to cable let alone high speed internet access through cable will also be connected to this county wide network.
Over nine hundred square miles of sweet sweet FREE wireless access! No taxpayer money is being used for this project, its all coming from private business in exchange for other "for charge" services to consumers and businesses.
There are seven "test" communities, and MINE is one of them!! Yippee!!
